The Great Atlantic Swim
Later this year we’ll be closely following the first leg of Brit Dan Martin’s amazing Global Triathlon as he swims across the Atlantic, but following not too far behind Dan will be a relay team of 15 swimmers, led by Brit Chris Ford. The team will attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean non-stop, taking it in turns to swim individual sessions up to 5 miles, which they hope will eventually accumulate the 3200 miles between New York, USA, and Penzance, Cornwall.
The Great Atlantic Swim is all in aid of the Marine Conservation Society, and you can following this incredible venture throughout the year through http://www.thegreatatlanticswim.org.uk/
100 Things: What’s on your list?
When Sebastian Terry heard about the death of a close friend, it sparked him into action. Everyone has at least one thing they want to do or achieve before they die, he reasoned, so he decided to take the idea a little further and made a list one hundred items long.
100 Things stand between Seb Terry and true fulfillment, and he’s currently on his way to ticking every one of them off the list. A couple of days ago his Facebook status read ‘Sebastian Terry is about to tick off item #46- Learn French! Step 1- Move to Geneva, Switzerland for 3 months. Flight leaves at 12.30pm tomorrow.’
Committed he is, and to date he has totted up an impressive haul of experiences including running with bulls, hitch-hiking across the USA, posing naked for an art class and meeting a namesake. For write-ups of these and the rest of Seb’s antics, visit www.100things.com.au

The Plastiki Expedition
Crossing the Pacific in a sailing boat is one thing, but using a boat made almost entirely of plastic bottles? Hold back your cynicism, though, because the Plastiki is no ordinary…erm…boat made of bottles.

The brainchild of David de Rothschild, the Plastiki Expedition involves a 60 foot catamaran crossing the Pacific from San Francisco to Sydney with a mission to highlight the issues of plastic dumping in the ocean and to inspire sustainable solutions to solve the subsequent ecological damage done to the world’s oceans and their inhabitants. Plastic waste kills up to 1 million sea birds and 100,000 sea mammals each year, it’s time for talking to turn to action now.
A quite incredible craft and a genuinally unique scientific adventure might go some way to turning heads towards one of the planet’s most critical ecological problems. Find out more at www.theplastiki.com
Two lads crossing Victoria Island
This apparently happened a while ago, but here’s a very interesting article about two guys from the 1000hour day project. They were attempting to cross Victoria Island in the Arctic circle – read http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2008/05/two_crazy_guys_plan_on_crossing_victoria_island_in_100_days/

Mongol Rally 2009
Now a regular in the media, the Mongol Rally is the brainchild of The League of Adventurists, who are possibly one of the coolest companies in the world. The concept of the Mongol Rally is simple, get a crap car and drive it from England to Mongolia. This year’s spots are all sold up, but take a look at the website to find out about next year’s events, and the other crazy-genius follies organised by The Adventurists.

The Murray, by Windsurfer

Rod McEwin on The Murray
Australia’s longest river, The Murray, is over 2000km long from source to see, and one man is attempting to career its length by windsurfer. Great to see Rod McEwin continuing Australia’s tradition of unique forms of transport, you can read more about Rod’s mission on http://www.macrod.com.au/

This woman is quite incredible. Sara Campbell is a British yoga teacher who started Freediving three years ago, now she holds the world record for the greatest depth dived by a woman (96m) and continues to strive for the 100m mark. Talk about turning her life around. Be inspired.
Unicycle Across Australia

Welcome to This Is Your Freedom
We’re here to help you make the most of your charity challenge. Whatever you’re thinking of doing, if you’re embarking on an extraordinary project we think you deserve some help.
Deep down we’re all searching for some kind of freedom, and as life ticks by the urge to inject some sense of accomplishment and excitement into our lives. Take Ben Stiff, for example. At the age of 18 he decided he wanted to travel the length of Britain on a skateboard. He talked about the idea and then did what most of us don’t, he acted on it. He skated into Lands End in July 2008 not only becoming the youngest and fastest person to travel that small yet hilly land on a board, but he also raised thousands of pounds for Corda, the Stroke and Heart Disease Charity.
Everybody involved in This Is Your Freedom has at some point in their life unzipped their security blanket and dashed out of the comfort zone, and we know that however selfish our initial ideals of freedom were, the act of simply ‘doing it’ generated enough enthusiasm to benefit more lives than just our own.
So here’s what we do. We encourage you to achieve the goals you’ve set yourself. We have experience in marketing and design and promotion and, most importantly, we’ve battled headlong through adversity in fairly unusual conditions. We know you can do the same.
So, whether you’re planning on skating a long way, like Ben Stiff, or want to draw more cartoons than anyone else ever has in 24 hours, like Jules Faber, or perhaps you want to self-propel yourself around the world, like Jason Lewis, then we’re here to help. If you have your mind set on a unique and extraordinary goal, and you want at least some aspect of your challenge to benefit others, then we’d be happy to give you a push. After all, this is your freedom we’re talking about.
If you have a charity challenge, solo or group adventure, or some other mad act of wonderfulness cooking, then let us know. We’re here to promote what you do, and help you make the most of your project.
